Partial and Complete Dentures

Overview

What Are Partial and Complete Dentures?

Dentures are removable dental appliances designed to replace missing teeth and restore oral function and aesthetics. They come in two main types: partial dentures, which replace some missing teeth, and complete dentures, which replace an entire arch of teeth.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. They consist of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored base, which is supported by a metal or flexible framework. The framework may include clasps or connectors that attach to the remaining teeth for stability.

Benefits of Partial Dentures:

  • Restores function and improves chewing ability.
  • Prevents remaining teeth from shifting.
  • Enhances speech and appearance.
  • A cost-effective alternative to dental implants or bridges.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures are used when all teeth in an arch (upper or lower) are missing. They rest directly on the gums and are held in place through suction or with the help of denture adhesives. There are four types of complete dentures:

  1. Immediate Dentures: Placed immediately after tooth removal so the patient does not have to go without teeth during the healing process.
  2. Conventional Dentures: Placed after the gums have healed following tooth extractions.
  3. Implant supported removable dentures: Implants are used to support a removable acrylic denture.
  4. Implant supported fixed dentures: A denture made of a stronger material is permanently attached to implants. This allows the denture to be much smaller since it does not rely on the patient’s gums for support.

Benefits of Complete Dentures:

  • Restores full chewing ability and facial structure.
  • Improves speech and confidence.
  • Custom-made for a comfortable and natural fit.

The Denture Fitting Process

  1. Initial Consultation: Your dentist will examine your mouth and discuss the best denture options for you.
  2. Impressions and Measurements: Molds of your gums and any remaining teeth are taken to create custom dentures.
  3. Trial Fitting: A temporary model may be created to ensure a proper fit before the final dentures are made.
  4. Final Placement: The completed dentures are adjusted and fitted for maximum comfort and function.
  5. Follow-Up Appointments: Adjustments may be needed as your gums and mouth adapt to the new dentures.

Caring for Your Dentures

To ensure longevity and comfort:

  • Clean dentures daily with a soft brush and mild soap or denture cleaner.
  • Remove them at night to allow your gums to rest.
  • Store them in a denture-soaking solution to prevent drying out.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for adjustments and check-ups.
